About Us

Ugly Duckling Films is a film, tv and media production company that works with unique and distinctive filmmakers to produce bold and powerful, character-driven drama.

Founded by Danish-born producer in 1995, Lene Bausager, the company holds strong relationships with publishers, agents and directors worldwide, and enjoys creative partnerships with many production companies based in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe.

Originally involved in the production of commercials, live concerts and documentaries for award-winning directors including Sean Ellis, Johan Renck, Jonas Ackerlund and Baillie Walsh, and for companies such as Ridley Scott's RSA Films and Black Dog, Ugly Duckling Films began producing feature films in 2002, serving as the minority co-producer in Nordisk Film's Stealing Rembrandt (2003) and Oh Happy Day (2004).


In 2004 the company produced the short film Cashback, which won 16 international film festival awards and was nominated for the 2006 Academy Award. Written and directed by Sean Ellis, Ugly Duckling Films went on to produce a feature-length version of Cashback in 2006which was acquired by Gaumont. 


A first-look deal with Gaumont led to the company's second feature with Ellis, The Broken (2007) starring Lena Headey, and almost simultaneously, Flashbacks of a Fool (2008), with an outstanding ensemble cast led by Daniel Craig.

2012 welcomed the co-production of Ginger and Rosa starring Elle Fanning, while more recently, 2015 saw the indie sci-fi hit Coherence. Written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, the film reached No. 1 on the iTunes download chart and enjoyed a successful festival run.

In 2016 the company began their venture into television, and is developing a vibrant and varied slate that includes working with both new and established talent and original concepts.
